Week One (11/23) on our WIDE Friday fests: Rough crew on this outing. Me, Sooze, Will, Chris Trudeau, Bill Russell, and Vicki McMichael.... Cold, windy, Josh standard. Cracked off the Comfortably Numb, Jumar of Flesh, and Six Pack CrackLast week (12/7) when everyones roof was blowing off and the Mother of All Storms was supposed to be kicking Rob Halford s ass.... Me and Sooze went out to The Good, the Bad and The UglyThis Fridays (12/14) objectives are La Belle Katchina and This Ain't No Party, aka Crotch Crack. Be there or be square. Late noon start. (done deal edit: check the links) Friday 12/21/07: Objective, was to be a top secret recon of Huge and Choice. Never got out the door with all those damn FISH orders taking up my valuable OW time.... oh well.... Off to AZ for some XMas stuff and then the Stronghold. If there is wide there I will find it. Report to follow when I get back. 1/4/08: did fornicate all for wide in the Stronghold. Went out to find Crotch Putty today with Will and Sooze. Not sure if we found it, but we found something.... good too! Looks like we did Couldn't Wait instead of Crotch Putty. Good route!!! 1/11/08: Wide crew hit Tumbling Rainbow, Fisticuffs, Championship Wrestling and Clean and Jerk, with a sidecar of Run For Your Life. Good day! The Tumbling Rainbow and Championship Wrestling are up on the Beta Pages now. Big crew on this one: Me, Sooze, Will, Mr. X, Fletch, Sherman and Megan.

Do you think this will become a habit? There's a crack really close to the trail on the way to good, bad, ugly which looked appealing to me. Pretty tall for a highball, pretty short for a lead. It's on the right, just past the split in the trail. Any good?

There's a chimney on the far left side of The Wart. Is that the one you're talking about Scuffy? You can see it pretty well from the vicinity of Clean & Jerk. It felt about 5.7.

Sorry Crotch, I don't know where the Wart is. This thing doesn't look like a chimney, though: more like 6". Not that tall, and I don't think it's connected to a formation that would be in the book. sm

Scuffy, The Wart is in Real Hidden Valley, sort of next to (north of) Locomotion Rock. It's in Vogel's JT guide.

I'll admit the fall was probably livable, if you like eating through a tube. As for the 5.7 part... well, that's just what I told you to keep from getting in trouble.

1/4/08.... possible Crotch Putty ascent. The books lie and we are usually lost. Will, Sooze and I still made it happen though. What route we did is still up in the air. I've deferred to the experts, well... expert, over at JTClimb. Here is the link if you want the see the magnificence of the day. http://www.joshuatreeclimb.com/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1199502588

Russ, you really got something going with all the josh Odubs on the beta pages. Because of the thrash factor on odubs generally, and the courseness of the rock, josh ow is something of unique animal and deserving of attention and respect.
I predict that Josh or southwest desert granite offwidths will be the new testpieces of the future.
you heard it here first.

Rule two is you can't always believe what you read, especially when MY LOVELY FAKE WIFE SUSAN IS USING MY LOGIN to post from her computer. I'm telling the admin! Oh...wait.... maybe I'll just whack her like them SuperTopo kids did to The Ball Hugger.

way out chances: Kate Mel
anyone else around? I mean anyone else around that we like? (non widefetish guys need to be approved by the "committee".)
As for the routes.... there is a 5 for 1 area out there that Will is investigating. Everything from 5.8 to 5.12, all wide on perfect rock and sunny skies. Chime in now and send us on a goose chase.....

I’m jealous of you guys! Wish I could join you today. Maybe some of the BAWC can make a pilgrimage to Wide Friday one of these winter weekends.
Things look pretty bleak for climbing this weekend up here. Maybe it will dry out next week.
Two of the hardcore (Steve Y. and Bob K ) showed up last night to climb wet wide wood. I just observed… I’m told that one of the advantages of climbing in the rain is that you don’t get as many splinters.
Anyone on the wide crew got a plan for the weekend?

This was a great WideFriday with fun routes. Too bad that Championship Wrestling spanked me at the starting pod. On lead AND on TR. Didn't seem to give anyone else trouble, damn! As for Fistacuffs, even though I made it to the summit to break it down, I hardly consider that "doing" the route.
I'll be back!

We probably got the big gear covered between us. Probably quads or more of everything big through #6 friends and a 8" tube and #4Bro.
You missed out on a couple of good ones today. Easily in the top 5 of JT wide I've seen. Meat locker/arctic circle style for good measure.

Flared Bear gets .10 in the new guides.
Could probably make a day near Echo with Deep Throat, Maneater, and those two big boulder cracks near Crime of Century (gotta be taller than Ipecac), and your secret roof crack thing, maybe Monkey Business or Space Slot in there also.
Of course I know fornicate-all about any of those except the Maneater and the cracks on the big boulder, could suck.

Will... thats what I see too... rain on sat PM. Might go out to the new approach and penetrate some monzonite..... if you know what I mean. Maybe do some GPS before the rain shows up... or just might do beer in the morning. Probably go in from this end and sorta early for us..... maybe do nothing..... is that a firm plan or what??

WideFriday for 1/25 was a bust.... never got out. On Saturday I did some recon and found some cool ass chimneys and undone wide in our new happy hunting grounds. Next week you guys will need to carry the WideFriday torch... I'll be out of town and hopefully on some new wide. Pics of course to follow.
Update Edit: Went to the Stronghold and took a peek and got inside my "Undone Wide" that now appears to be poached by some fussy Tucson locals.... they can have it. The walls were lined with oatmeal and it was too low angle for my efforts. Way Rob Halford that them dudes poached it though. Is there no honor?

Whoah that one looks hard. It looks like your rope is running all wonky, or is that just the camera angle?
It is wonky. To start there is a mild death fall.... so you place some really bad pro in a small overlap that just might hold if you pitch out of the flare before you get some real pro. It is situated over a chasm, so if you fall right away, you go down a big hole. As Will said... "well, that pro just might turn it into only a leg breaker, instead of a spine breaker." Then of course, higher up the rope dragged through the crack and got stuck when a cam inverted... standard story.... death everywhere!!!!!

I'm behind the times on these filters I think. What's the cloven hoof thing? I'm partial to hands. Especially since my forearms and ankles are still looking a little psoriatic.

This appears to have been a long 22 (11?) work days! With tenacity like that, the burner will be child's play, (you'll have a TR for me, right?) we can always have Werner on call.
And yeah, that was me, on that cloven foodt thing, drunk with with (briefly available) strange powers, what can I say?

Jay... now is the time to buy... $66.00 a square foot.... I'll help you move.
Might have torn my good rotator cuff doing cement work over the last few days..... I'll need 4 beers and 18 hours off to heal completely. After that, sky's the limit. Moving van, burner, civil war, Chazbro remodel.... I'm open.

Oh yeah... it's dry. I think it is actually cooler than the Valley. Us older guys start to like the heat after a while. Check out all them geezers in Palm Springs... they are there for a reason.

But I can't golf (too young) and I'm too svelte/fat? to buckle my pants up that high.
