Title: Untuched virgin crags -- in Nevada
Post by: RonAnderson on August 24, 2020, 10:02:31 am
I look at these every time I fish a certain spot on the carson river..   Tiers of stone that are around 200 feet tall-- splitter cracks and corners, roofs and faces--- never been touched...

Takes a bit of 4 wheelin then a wade acrss the carson river to get to them,, or a lot of 4 wheeling and a longish approach down a steep hill..  I look at these every time I fish a certain spot on the river. ;)

Not untouched- but Ron, Lon, or any other Nevadans, do you know the story on either of these two?... photos below
1) a janky via ferrata up a tower near Reno
2) domeland near Fallon-ish, with bolt ladder up the main tower (saw one old sheared 1/4", and the "new" hardware are all crappy drop-ins)

We were out there around Fallon decades ago..  Thought it to be a bit rubble-y   Ill bet Alvin McClane did something there..   Dont know about the viaferrata stuff.

Alvin seems to be quite the Nevada legend,
you ever meet him or rope up Ron?

NO I knew his brothers though..     But i read and knew about him BITD  -- a geologist and climber of the Great basin and surrounds-- out where no one had ever ventured..  He did one of the very first routes at the Wild Granites and many many other places throughout NV..   He never did a guide or journal that i know of..   BUt we have found old anchors,, fixed pins and fixed chocks that were very likely evidence of Alvin lol!

Kind like the Fred Becky of Nevada if you will..Only in Nevada your in a small club of climbers- especially back a few decades..  No one knew what we were doing- it was way too far out in the "wilderness" and away from "the valley".
